Halloween 2012

I love Halloween, the whole experience.  Love making costumes, decorating, cooking spooky snacks.  This year my kids asked to have a big Halloween party, and I agreed even though Halloween fell on a Wednesday - it was going to be such fun!  I thought I could pull it off if we planned in advance and started to prepare the house a few days prior.  So, we sent invitations and planned the activities. I even designed and made a new candle holder to grace our fireplace.

When last weekend it was time to decorate the house, it turned out there was a small problem - hurricane Sandy was heading our way.  That meant heavy rain and crazy wind, so decorating outside was out of question.  We stuck to our plan and decorated the house inside, using store-bought decorations and making our own, like ghosts made of plastic milk jugs and white garbage bags...

Sandy came and went and we were very thankful to be among the lucky ones who did not sustain any damage.  We lost power for about 8 hours and the glass screen in our gas fireplace exploded into a thousand pieces, but that was it.  Whew...  But it was still raining on Tuesday evening and our house was still not decorated outside.

Today the weather was GORGEOUS, the kids left for school and I had to cram lots of party prep into 6 hours.   I cooked bagel-pizza mummies, hot dog ghosts, and a dessert that looked like worms in the dirt.  I brought out and set up party tables, dishes and whatnot.  And yes, I decorated the yard!  I had to run around like mad to do it in 40 minutes, but I made it!

Then there was dressing up, guests arriving, the party, my friends taking pictures, kids screaming, digging through lychee and blueberry "eyeballs" blindfolded to find a clue for the scavenger hunt, more pictures, trick-or-treating, dessert, cleanup...  Now I am sitting on my couch completely spent enjoying the quiet as party scenes flash in my mind...  It will be sad taking those outside decorations down tomorrow...
